With financial support from Volunteer WV and the in-kind labor of local volunteers and experienced WWOOFers, the Maternity Diary Trail kicked off the groundbreaking of the new Nourished Feasts & Farmacy garden plot. Using a ‘no-till’ method, the goal is to prepare the ground for maximum nutrients in order to start a culturally-inspired garden in the Spring of 2024. The yields will provide FREE CSAs to select expectant mothers most affected by the maternity and food desert crisis of Appalachia.
Tasks included stripping cardboard of all tape and plastic, bush and weed whacking the patches, driving posts, setting up cisterns, laying compost, and, of course, breaking bread together! While the goal was to get a 100′ x 50′ plot marked and started, the real reward was in making new friends, bridging cultural gaps, and reinforcing there is far more good in the world than we sometimes focus on!
