What is a Heritage Trail?
A Heritage Trail is many things—sometimes it’s a route you can physically explore, visiting one or all of the mapped points in person or online. Other times, it’s a collection of stories woven together by a shared theme that, taken as a whole, paints a portrait of a community—its past, present, and hopes for the future. A trail might trace the experiences of a specific group, mapping out the paths they’ve walked and the changes they seek. All of our trails are deeply rooted in the Appalachian region we call home.
At the heart of every trail is a purpose: to foster pride in people and place, to amplify voices that too often go unheard, and to share the rich and complex histories of Appalachian communities—even when those stories are hard to tell. We aim to support place-rooted cultural and economic renewal, use community mapping to address local challenges, and build lasting relationships with those who shape and sustain this region.
We believe in honoring the work of those who tend this land and one another, and in walking together toward a future grounded in justice—racial, economic, gendered, and environmental.

Historic Schoolhouse Trail
Step back in time and visit the locations of Hardy County’s remaining historic one- and two-room schoolhouses. At one time, the county had more than 120 schools. To date, we have identified, researched and mapped 23 schools and interviewed former pupils who are now community elders.
The trail is ever growing and available for you to enjoy. Ride the trail or view it online. Either way, we are certain it will be a special treat.

African American cemeteries and burial sites are vital records with immense historical and cultural importance often invisible to the public. This trail will identify, redress, and map public and private locations.
